Athitheeswarar Temple, Vaniyambadi, Vellore

Athitheeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Vaniyambadi Town in Vellore District of Tamilnadu. The Temple is located at Old Vaniyambadi. The shrine is believed to be more than 1000 years old. This is the special parihara Sthalam for people born on “Punarvasu” star.

Legends

Vaniyambadi:

The legend goes that Lord Brahma once cursed mother Saraswathi to lose her sense of speech. Saraswathi came to Earth and reached Sringeri and began to meditate. Lord Brahma went in search of her and finally found her in Sringeri, convinced her and took her back to Heaven. While going back they reached this temple on the Northern belt of River Palar, stayed and worshipped Lord Shiva here. Lord Shiva pleased on her worship and gave back her speech. On getting back the speech mother Saraswathi sang here. Hence this place was called as Vaniyambadi.

Athitheeswarar:

The other Legend is Saint Kashyap’s wife Athithi worshipped Lord Shiva here on every Punarpoosam day and got a boon. Hence Lord Shiva here, being called in her name as Athitheeswarar. This temple is also Parihara Temple for person born in Punarpoosam star.

The Temple

The temple is associated with people born under the Punarpoosam Nakshatram. Presiding Deity is called as Athitheeswarar and Mother is called as Periyanayagi / Bruhannayaki. Lord Dakshinamurthy is seen in the temple, sitting on the Nandhi the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva holding a deer, battle-axe with a Chin Mudra, a symbol keeping the thumb and second finger together while the other three fingers are together separately.

The philosophy behind the thumb and the second finger touching each other is, that the Jeevatma (second finger) bends to join the Paramatma (thumb) thus keeping away from the other three fingers representing arrogance, fate and illusion. These three drag the Jeevatma the second finger from Paramatma the thumb. The Bruhannayaki Akanda Vilwa tree is a tree with broad branches and is the temple tree. Theertham is called as Shiva Theertham.

The temple is open from 6.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Festivals

Chithirai Brahmmotsavam  April-May, Mahasivarathri in February-March, and Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January are grandly celebrated in the temple.

Prayers

The temple is associated with Punarpoosam Nakshatra born people. Those people born in Punarpoosam star having trouble in horoscope will get relief after doing pujas here. Punarpoosam Star people are advised to visit this temple during their star day and are suggested to do flower pooja to the God, in order to get rid of their adverse planetary effect.

*பிரம்மா சரஸ்வதியிடம், “உலக உயிர்களைப் படைக்கும் நான்தான் பெரியவன். எனவே தான் பிரம்மா,விஷ்ணு, சிவன் என எனது பெயரை முதலில் கூறுகிறார்கள்” எனக் கூறினார்.*

*இதைக்கேட்டு கலைமகளுக்கு சிரிப்பு வந்தது.கோபமடைந்த பிரம்மா, வாணியை பேசும் சக்தியற்றவளாக மாறும்படி சபித்தார். வருந்திய வாணி பூலோகம் வந்து சிருங்கேரி என்னும் தலத்தில் தவம் இருந்தாள்.*

*வாணியை பிரிந்த பிரம்மா,தேவர்களைத் திருப்திப்படுத்தி யாகம் செய்து, அவர்கள் மூலம் மனைவியைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க முற்பட்டார். ஆனால், மனைவி இல்லாமல் செய்யும் யாகத்தின் பலனைத் தங்களால் பெற முடியாது என தேவர்கள் சொல்லி விட்டனர்.*

*எனவே பலதிசைகளிலும் தேடி,சிருங்கேரியில் அவளைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார். அவளை சமரசம் செய்து அழைத்துச் சென்றார்.செல்லும் வழியில், பாலாற்றின் வடகரையில் அமைந்துள்ள சிவாலயத்தில் தங்கினார்.*

*இதனால் மகிழ்ந்த சிவனும், பார்வதியும் வாணிக்கு அருள்செய்து அவளைப்பாடும்படி கூறினர்.வாணியும் பேசும் சக்தி பெற்று இனிய குரலில் பாடினாள்.*

*கலை)வாணி பாடிய தலம் என்பதால், இவ்வூர் “வாணியம்பாடி”ஆனது.*

*மேற்கு நோக்கிய இந்தக் கோயிலை வழிபட்டால் ஆயிரம் கிழக்கு பார்த்த கோயிலை வழிபட்ட பலன் கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம். அம்மன் பெரியநாயகி தெற்கு நோக்கி அருள் பாலிக்கிறாள்.* 

*இராமபிரான் பிறந்த நட்சத்திரம் புனர்பூசம் என்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.*

*காச்ய முனிவரின் தர்ம பத்தினி அதிதி. இவள் புனர்பூசம் நட்சத்திரம் தோறும் இத்தலத்தில் விரதமிருந்து தேவர்களை பெற்றாள் எனப் புராணங்கள் கூறுகிறது.*

*எனவே புனர்பூசம் நட்சத்திரத்தில் பிறந்தவர்கள் தங்கள் வாழ்நாளில் அடிக்கடியோ, தங்களது பிறந்த நட்சத்திர நாளிலோ சென்று வழிபட வேண்டிய தலம் வாணியம்பாடி.*

*மாதம் தோறும் புனர்பூசம் நட்சத்திரத்தில் மளிகை சாமான்கள் வாங்கினால் தானிய விருத்தி அதிகரிக்கும். புதுவீடு, வாடகை வீடு பால் காய்ச்சுதல் போன்ற விருத்தியாககூடிய செயல்களை இந்த நட்சத்திரத்தில் செய்வது சிறப்பு.*

*இக்கோயில் பல்லவப்பேரரசர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டது. மூன்று நிலை மேற்கு இராஜகோபுரமும், ஐந்து நிலை கிழக்கு இராஜகோபுரமும் உள்ளது.சிவன் மேற்கு நோக்கியும், சரஸ்வதி கிழக்கு நோக்கியும் உள்ளது சிறப்பு.*

*இங்குள்ள தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி மான்,மழு ஏந்தி, யோக பட்டை, சின் முத்திரையுடன் நந்தி மீது அமர்ந்துள்ளார்.*
