Historical Importance

Once upon a time Swamy Thirumalaimurugan appeared one Poovan Battar Archagar of Thirumalai Kaliamman Temple’s dream and asked him to find out the idol (stone vickragam) of swamy Thirumalai kumaran which is under the Bamboo bush,situated at Kottaithiradu on the way to Achankoil,ants would show the way to locate the idol. The message was conveyed to the then Kerala King of Pandalam.The king and Battar went to Kottaithiradu in order to find out the statue as stated in the dream ants paved the path.Lord Thirumalai Murugan statue was found.The same was brought and installed in the sanctum sanctorum of this present temple.It would had happened around 600 years back.

Literary Importance

Prof. Dr. GanapathiRaman in his thesis work about this temple’s history noted that the place and hill were ruled by Ayandiran and known as Kaviramalai.Silapathikaram also spoke of this hill as Neduvelkundram.It is said kannaki passed through this hill to Kerala Desam.Saint Arunagirinathar composed Thiruppugal in praise of Thirumalai Murugan with sweet music.Thandapani swamigal,Kavirasa pandarathiaya noted poets also in their poetic diction sung in favour of Thirumalaikumaran.These are all found in the poems like Thirumalai kumaran pillaithamil.ThirumalaiMurugan Kuravanji,Thirumalai murugan Nondinadagam, Thirumalai karuppan Kathal.There are also works like ThirumalaiMurugan anthathi, Thirumalaikumaraswamy Alankara pirabantham,Thirumanimalai Thiruthalattu speak Thirumalaikumaran’s Fame.

Special features

Kannaki,Saptha Kanniyars( 7 Maiden deities) worshipped Lord Murugan.Thirumalaimurugan pillaithamil of Saint Arunagirinathar is a heartrending song.Kavirasapandarathaiya,thandapaniswamigal are ardent devotees of Lord Thirumalai Murugan.They got divine power from him.

King of Pandalam,chokkampatti chieftung,Sivananajathevar Poovathal, Sivagami Paradesiyar made yeomen service to this temple.Sivagami paradesiyar by her own efforts recovered huge area of nanjai punjai lands through court from the encroachers.The hill is in the form of OHM and about 400ft from Landmark.

There is a pure water tank in the top of the hill. It was formed at the divine power of sage Agasthiyar.It is said daily a lotus flower would blossom in this tank.Indras and Sapthkanniyars plucked placed it at the foot of Thirumalai Murugan and worshipped daily.It is a boon and sacred water.

பூவன் பட்டர் என்ற திருமலைக்காளி கோயில் பூசாரியின் கனவில் திருமலைமுருகன் தோன்றி, தான் அச்சன்கோயிலுக்குச்செல்லும் வழியில் கோட்டைத்திரடு என்ற இடத்தில் மூங்கில் புதருக்குள் இருப்பதாகவும், தான் இருக்கும் இடத்தைக் கட்டெறும்பு ஊர்ந்து சென்று காட்டும் என்றும் கூறினார்.இது பந்தள மகாராஜாவிற்குத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது.சேரமன்னரான பந்தளமகாராஜாவும், பூவன்பட்டரும் கோட்டைத்திரட்டிற்கு வந்து கட்டெறும்பு ஊர்ந்து சென்று வழிபட்ட மூங்கில் புதருக்குள்ளிருந்த முருகப்பெருமானை எடுத்தனர்.அவர்கள் முருகப்பெருமானைக்கொண்டு வந்து குன்றின் உச்சியில் ஸ்தாபகம் செய்தனர்.முருகப்பெருமான் குன்றின் மீது எழுந்தருளி பாலசுப்பிரமணியனாக காட்சி தருகிறார்.

இலக்கியச் சிறப்பு

பேராசிரியர் கணபதிராமன் அவர்கள் ஆய்அண்டிரன் ஆண்ட மலையான் கவிரமலை இதுவென்றும்,சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் வரும் நெடுவேள்குன்றம் என்பது இக்குன்றமே என்றும்,கண்ணகி இக்குன்றைக் கடந்தே சேரநாடு சென்றாள் என்றும் ஆராய்ச்சிக் குறிப்பேட்டில் திருமலைக்கோயில் வரலாற்றை எழுதியுள்ளார்.அருணகிரிநாதர் தமது நூலான திருப்புகழில் திருமலை முருகனைப் புகழ்ந்து பாடியுள்ளார்.தண்டபாணி சுவாமிகள் முருகன் மீது பல பாடல்கள் இயற்றியுள்ளார். கவிராசபண்டாரத்தையா என்னும் புலவர்பெருமான் திருமலைமுருகன் பிள்ளைத்தமிழ், திருமலையமக அந்தாதி போன்ற நூல்களைப் பாடியுள்ளார். திருமலைமுருகன் குறவஞ்சி,திருமலை முருகன் நொண்டி நாடகம்,திருமலை கறுப்பன் காதல் போன்ற நூல்களும் உள்ளன.திருமலை முருகன் அந்தாதி திருமலைக் குமாரசுவாமி அலங்கார பிரபந்தம்,திருமணிமாலை,திருத்தாலாட்டு போன்ற நூல்களும் இம்முருகப்பெருமான் புகழ் பாடுகின்றன.

தனிச்சிறப்பு

அருணகிரிப் பெருமான், கவிராசப்பண்டாரத்தையா, வண்ணச்சரபம் தண்டபாணி சுவாமிகள் ஆகியோர் இப்பெருமானைப் பாடிப்பரவியுள்ளார். அகத்தியர், கற்புக்கரசி கண்ணகி, சப்தகன்னியர், இம்முருகனை வழிபட்டு வந்துள்ளனர்.

பந்தளமஹாராஜா,சொக்கம்பட்டி குறுநில மன்னர் சிவனணைஞ்சாத்தேவர்,பூவாத்தாள்.சுவகாமி பரதேசியார் போன்ற அருளாளர்கள் இக்கோயில் வளர்ச்சிக்கு உறுதுணைசெய்துள்ளார்கள்.சுவகாமி பரதேசியார் நன்செய்,புன்செய் நிலங்களையும்,தோப்புகளையும் இம்முருகப்பெருமானுக்குத் தானமாக வழங்கியுள்ளார்.மேற்குத்தொடர்ச்சி மலைச்சரிவில் “ஓம்” என்ற வடிவம் கொண்ட உயர்ந்த குன்றில் நானூறு அடி உயரத்திற்கு மேல் இக்கோயில் உள்ளது.

இத்திருத்தலத்தின் தீர்த்தமான பூஞ்சுனை,அகத்திய முனிவரால் உருவாக்கப்பட்டது.நாள்தோறும் ஒரு தாமரை மலர் இச்சுனையில் மலரும்.அதை இந்திராதி தேவர்களும் சப்த கன்னியர்களும் பறித்து முருகனுக்குச் சூட்டி வழிபட்டு வந்த அற்புத தீர்த்தமாகும்.

இம்முருகப்பெருமானுக்கு நாள்தோறும் எட்டு கால பூஜைகள் நடைபெறுகின்றன.

செங்கோட்டையிலிருந்து வடமேற்கில் 10 கி.மீ தொலைவில் இத்திருக்கோயில் அமைந்துள்ளது.இத்திருக்கோயில் செங்கோட்டை ரயில் நிலையத்திலிருந்து 8 கிலோ மீட்டர் தூரத்தில் வடமேற்குத் திசையில் இருக்கின்றது.தென்காசி மற்றும் செங்கோட்டையிலிருந்து பேருந்து வசதிகள் உள்ளன.2012 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் மலை மேல் வாகனங்கள் சென்று வர தார்ச் சாலையாக மலைப்பாதை அமைக்கப்பட்டு பயன்பாட்டில் இருந்து வருகின்றது.
