Overview

Puliyur Vyakrapureeswarar Temple located in Perumpuliyur in Thanjavur is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Vyakrapureeswarar, Puliyurnathar and His consort Mother Soundaryanayaki Amman, Azhagammai Thayar. This is a Swayambhu temple of Lord Shiva. This is one of the 275 Padal Petram Sthalams.

About The Temple

Lord Shiva’s idol is a self incarnated, swayambumurthy here.. While traditionally the Navagrahas the nine planets are facing different directions in temples, they are facing Sun in this temple. Puliyur Vyakrapureeswarar Temple faces east and has a marvelous 3-tier Rajagopuram. The spacious prakara is adorned with many shrines for other Gods.Lords Dakshinamurthy, Siddhi Vinayaka, Somaskanda, Arthanareeswar, Navagrahas, Nataraja, Chandikeswara, Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai, Bhairava, Mother Varahi and Sun, Moon and Nandhi all are east facing. The inner sanctum is designed with a four step lotus petal peeta. Saint Arunagiriar had sung the glory of Lord Muruga of this temple in his Tirupugazh hymns.The place covered with wild bushes was brought to the attention of the world by His Holiness Sundara Swamigal of Madurai. Lord Arthanareeswar is near the Lingodhbava shrine.

About The Deity

The presiding deity of this temple is Vyakrapureeswarar, puliyurnathar ( Lord Shiva) and his consorts are azhagammai and Soundaryanayaki.

Legend and Stories

A sage with tiger legs and claws called Sage Vyakrapada learnt the glory of Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram from his father Mathiyandan. He worshipped Lord Tirumoola Nathar in Chidambaram. He climbed the trees with his tiger legs and had eyes in his finger nails to check the purity of the flowers to use them for his Shiva Puja. He occupies a place in Nataraja shrine on one side. Sage Patanjali has his place on the other side. Vyakrapada worshipped Lord in five places the names ending with the suffix Puliyur. They are Erukatham Puliyur, Omam Puliyur, Perumpattra Puliyur (Chidambaram), Tirupathiri Puliyur, and Perum Puliyur.

Maha Shivrathri is very devotionally celebrated in the temple in February-March

Significance

Devotees buying new vehicles perform Alankara to Lord with garlands. It is believed that no accident would occur if they perform this prayer.Devotees offer pujas to Lord and Mother with Vastras and contribute for the renovations of the temple.

புலிக்கால் முனிவரான வியாக்ரபாதர், தன் தந்தை மாத்தியந்தினரிடம் தில்லை நடராஜரின் பெருமையை கேட்டறிந்து, அங்கு வந்து திருமூலநாதரை வழிபட்டு வந்தார். மரங்களில் ஏறி, பூ பறிக்க புலிக்கால்களையும், அம்மலர்களை ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்து சிவபூஜை செய்ய நகங்களில் கண்களையும் பெற்றார். அதனால் இவருக்கு வியாக்ரபாதர் (வியாக்ரம்–புலி; பாதர்–கால்களை உடையவர்) என்று பெயர் வந்தது. நடராஜரின் சன்னதிகளில் ஒரு புறம் இவரும், மற்றொரு புறம் பதஞ்சலி மகரிஷியும் உள்ளனர். புலிக்கால் முனிவராகிய இவர் வழிபட்ட தலங்கள் திருப்பாதிரிப்புலியூர், பெரும்பற்றப்புலியூர் (சிதம்பரம்), எருக்கத்தம் புலியூர், ஓமாம்புலியூர், பெரும்புலியூர் ஆகியன. பஞ்ச புலியூர்த்தலங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.நான்கு அடுக்குகளால் ஆன தாமரை மலரின் மேல் சுவாமியின் கருவறை சிறப்பாக அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அருணகிரிநாதர் இத்தல முருகனை தனது திருப்புகழில் பாடியுள்ளார். புதர் மண்டிக்கிடந்த இத்தலத்தை மதுரை சுந்தர சுவாமிகள் வெளிஉலகிற்கு தெரியப்படுத்தினார்.

இலிங்கோத்பவர் அருகில் அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வரர் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். 3 நிலை ராஜகோபுரத்துடன் கிழக்கு பார்த்த கோயில். பிரகாரத்தில் சித்தி விநாயகர், வள்ளி தெய்வானையுடன் முருகப்பெருமான், தெட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, நால்வர், அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வரர், சண்டிகேஸ்வரர், நவகிரகம், சோமாஸ்கந்தர், வாராகி, பைரவர், சூரியன், சந்திரன், நந்தி, நடராஜர் சன்னதிகள் உள்ளன. இத்தல இறைவன் சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். பொதுவாக நவக்கிரகங்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு திசையில் இருக்கும். ஆனால் இங்கு நவகிரகங்கள் சூரியனைப்பார்த்தபடி உள்ளது சிறப்பாகும்.
