Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar Temple, Theeyathur, Pudukottai

Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Theeyathur Village in Avudaiyar Koil Taluk in Pudukottai District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar and Mother is called as Brihannayaki. The temple is associated with Uthiratadhi Nakshathra and is called as Uthiratadhi Star Temple.

Legends

Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar:

Lord Vishnu was performing Shiva Puja each day with 1000 lotus flowers. When the number was short by one, Lord Vishnu to make up the shortage tried to pluck one of his eyes to offer it Lord Shiva but was prevented by Lord Shiva and granted darshan. Mahalakshmi followed Lord Vishnu with the puja and realized her wish of Shiva darshan. As Lord Shiva granted Darshan to Mahalakshmi who worshipped him with 1000 flowers, He is named Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar. Sahasram means 1000.

Theeyathur:

As Fire God, Agni and Sun also known as Ayan worshipped here, the place is named Theeyathur. Thee in Tamil means fire. As Agni worshipped here, those suffering from heat related diseases worship here.

Uthiratadhi Star Temple:

The temple has special significance attached to Uthiratadhi Star. Sages Agir Budhan, Angirasa, Agni Purandhaka and divine sculptor Vishwakarma are born in this star. They come here on all monthly star days to worship Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar to perform pujas in their invisible form, according to belief.

The Temple

Presiding Deity is called as Sahasra Lakshmeeswarar. Lord of the temple is a Swayambumurthy gracing eastward. Mother is called as Brihannayaki and she is facing south. There are shrines for Vinayaka, Nandhi, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Brahmma, Nagar, Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, Navagrahas the nine planets, Chandikeswara, Bhairava, Surya-Sun, Chandra-Moon and a separate shrine for Vancha Ganapathi in the Temple premises. Sthala Vriksham is Neem Tree. Theertham associated with this Temple is Thamaraikulam (Lotus Tank).

Temple Opening Time

This temple is open for a few hours in the morning only and one has to speak to the Priests in advance.

Festivals

Maha Shivarathri is celebrated in this Temple with much fanfare.

Prayers

Uthiratadhi starrers pray seeking solutions to their problems. Devotees seek the blessings of Lord for relief from debt burdens and child boon and prosperity. People perform special abishek, archanas and Homas and offer Sweet Pudding with cashews, grapes, honey and Badam as Nivedhana to Lord and Mother and distribute it to poor. Hence the starrers are advised to visit the temple as often as they can or at least on their annual star day. As Agni worshipped here, those suffering from heat related diseases worship here.

நட்சத்திரக்காரர்களும், உடலில்

அதிகஉஷ்ணம்(வெப்பம்)உள்ளவர்களும் இத்தல இறைவனுக்கும் இறைவிக்கும் அபிசேகம் செய்து

சர்க்கரை பொங்கல் செய்து படைத்து 

ஏழைகளுக்கு வினியோகம் செய்தால்

நிச்சயமாக நலம் பல விளையும்.

தலவரலாறு :; திருமால் தினமும்

ஆயிரம் தாமரை மலர்களைக் கொண்டு ஈசனை பூஜித்து வந்தார்.ஒருநாள் பூஜையில் ஒரு

மலர் குறையவே மலருக்கு பதில்

தன் கண்ணை நோண்டி பூஜை செய்ய முடிவெடுத்தார் ஆனால் ஈசன்

அதை தடுத்து திருமாலுக்கு அருள்

புரிந்தார்.

இதுபோன்ற ஒரு பூஜை செய்ய முடிவுசெய்த லட்சுமி அகத்தியரின் யோசனைப்படி இத்தலம்  வந்து

ஈசனை ஆயிரம் தாமரை மலர்

கொண்டு பூஜித்து சிவனின்

அருள்பெற்றாள்.

எனவே இத்தல இறைவனுக்கு

சகஸ்ரலட்சுமீசுவரர் என பெயர்

வந்தது. (சகஸ்ரம்- ஆயிரம்)
