🛕 Achala Deepeshwarar Temple is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva located at Mohanur in Namakkal District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Achala Deepeshwarar and Kumareeswarar. Mother is called as Madhukara Veni and Kumarayee. The temple is linked with other Shiva temples praised in Thevaram hymns – Vaiputhalam.

 Legends

Etymology

🛕 Ambica called her son (Mahan) here. Hence the place was named Mahanur but changed as Mohanur later. Lord Muruga temple, where he stopped to the call of Ambica is on a hill just a little away.

Bharani Deepam

🛕 Bharani deepam lit in this temple in Karthikai month (November-December) is considered as significant as those lit in Thiruvannamalai the next day on Kruthika star day. Special pujas and abisheks are performed to Lord this day. A holy man respected as Beejavaba Maharshi was a staunch devotee of the Lord who used to light the Bharani deepa on the Deepasthambam in the temple and the practice is being continued with all festivity now. His sculpture is on a pillar in the temple.

🛕 As the temple is closely related to Deepa worship, a lamp is ever burning in Lord’s shrine. Hence, Lord is praised as Achala Deepeswarar. Achalam means that not wavering and firm as a hill. As the Lord is in his meditation posture, the deepa too is motionless.

Story behind Ambica Shrine

🛕 In days of yore, there was only the Shiva shrine in the temple. One Kumarayee, a staunch Lord Shiva devotee was selling curd for her livelihood. After sales, she used to offer the remaining curd to Lord Shiva as nivedhana and consumed it then. She became pregnant and delivered a handsome male child. People in the village suspected her chastity and spoke ill of her.

🛕 Kumarayee simply told them Lord Shiva knew her purity. While bathing in Cauvery, she merged in the river. Mother Ambica came from the river and granted darshan to all and made it known to all that she was curd seller woman. The shrine for Ambica was built then. As Ambica lived here as Kumarayee, she also bears that name and so Lord Shiva came to be called as Kumareeswarar.

Lord Muruga respecting Mother’s Call

🛕 Lord Muruga left his parents in Mount Kailash showing his protest against the Mango event is popular among devotees. He did not listen to the explanations of the parents. Ambica chased the son to take him back home. Shiva too followed Ambica. When Ambica asked Muruga to stop, He stood in this place respecting Mother’s call. Lord Shiva appeared as Swayambulinga as Achala Deepeswarar.

 History

🛕 This temple was built during 1449 – 54 during the reign of Anganna Nayakkar by Sendhamangalam Palayakkarargal. Hymns were sung on this temple by one of the 4 Saivaite saints, Appar.

The Temple

🛕 Lord Shiva appears facing west and the Goddess facing east. The shrines are designed as such that the Lord and Goddess appear right to each. Mother Madhukara Veni is facing east gracing the devotees. The idol is made of a single stone including the frame called Tiruvatchi. She was chasing Lord Muruga to take him back to Mount Kailash. Madhu means Milk. As a mother, milk flowed from her breasts when she called Muruga. Special pujas are performed in the shrine on all full moon days. People pray these days seeking child boon.

🛕 Lord Shiva is facing west and Ambica east. The shrines are so structured that both are right to each other, a rare design in this temple. There is a small Banalinga near the presiding Lord said to have been worshipped by the curd woman. Pujas are performed simultaneously to both. River Cauvery flows here from north to south as in Kasi-Varanasi. Lord is facing the river. Special pujas are performed to Ambica on the Aadi 18th day falling in July-August. In between the shrines of Lord and Mother is the shrine for Lord Muruga with his consorts Valli and Deivanai.

🛕 Lord Vinayaka blesses the devotees from a shrine in Prakara sitting with a serpent. Those afflicted by adverse effects of serpent planets pray here for relief with milk abishek. There is another Vinayaka outside the temple under a neem tree where women seek wedding boon offering Mangalsutra. Mother Varahi, Chamundi and Vaishnavi are in wall sculptures on the prakara wall. Pujas are performed on the 8thday of new moon fortnight for the three Devis and Lord Bhairava. Lord Sarabeswara shrine is outside the temple.

🛕 Mother Shiva Durga is on the wall in the front mandapam. As a tradition, Mother Durga is on the ghoshta wall of Shiva shrine with Mahishasura under her feet. Here, Durga is with eight hands on the rear wall on a lamb vahanam. This is also a rare feature found in this temple. The other shrines here are of Chandran, Sooriyan, Dakshinamurthy, Kannimoola Ganapathy, Raghu (with his wife), Kedhu, Kaala Bhairavar, Chandikeswara, Navagraha, Ayyanar, Sarabeswarar and 63 Saivaite Saints.

🛕 The Sthala Vriksham (Holy Tree) is Vilvam and the Theertham (Holy Water) is Cauvery River. On the western side of the temple, just opposite to the temple, but before the Cauvery river is a huge Peepal tree. Below this Peepal tree are several sculptures of Naagar (snake). These are kept by devotees as a dosha parihara for Raaghu Dosham. This temple is also special for weddings.

🛕 The temple is open from 6.30 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

 Festivals

🛕 Deepa – Light festival on Bharani star day in Karthikai (November-December), Shivarathri in Vaikasi (May-June), Arudra Darshan in Margazhi (December-January) are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

 Prayers

🛕 The belief is that devotees worshipping the Lord after a dip in the Cauvery would relieve him/her from the evil effects of previous births and would ensure longevity. Ayush Homas (for longevity) are often conducted in the temple. Those aged 60 and 80 celebrate their birth days in the temple. Devotees perform special abishek to Lord Mother offering vastras.

நாமக்கல் நகரில் இருந்து 19 கி.மீ. தொலைவிலும், பரமத்திவேலூரில் இருந்து 17 கி.மீ. தொலைவிலும், தொட்டியம் காட்டுப்புத்தூரில் இருந்து சுமார் 16 கி.மீ. தொலைவிலும் உள்ளது மோகனூர். இங்கே, ஊருக்குள், காவிரிக் கரையோரத்தில் உள்ளது ஸ்ரீஅசலதீபேஸ்வரர் ஆலயம்!

தயிர் விற்கும் குமராயியைத் தெரியாதவர்களே அந்த ஊரில் இல்லை. சிறியவர்கூட அவளை குமராயி என்றே அழைத்தனர். இரண்டு பானைகளில் தயிரை நிரப்பி, தலையில் வைத்தபடி, வீதி வீதியாகச் செல்வாள். தயிரை விற்று முடித்து, காவிரிக் கரைக்கு வருவாள். பானையில் ஒட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் தயிரை அப்படியே வழித்தெடுத்து, அருகில் உள்ள சிவலிங்கத்துக்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்வாள்! சிவபெருமானின் மீது அளவற்ற பக்தி அவளுக்கு!

ஒருநாள்... இதேபோல் தயிரை வழித்து அபிஷேகம் செய்து சிவனாரை வணங்கித் திரும்பிய போது, தயிர் அபிஷேகத்தில் குளிர்ந்து போன இறைவன், ‘இந்தா தயிருக்கு காசு’ என்று சொல்லி கொடுக்க... நெகிழ்ந்து போனாள் குமராயி! கெட்டியாக, சத்து மிகுந்த, தரமான தயிரைக் கொடுத்ததால், வியாபாரம் சிறப்புற நடந்தது. வாழ்க்கையும் செம்மையாயிற்று. தயிர் விற்ற காசை சிறுகச் சிறுகச் சேர்த்து, சிவனாருக்கும் கூடவே அம்பாளுக்கும் ஆலயம் எழுப்பி விரிவாக்கினாள்.

மனதுள் சிவபக்தியையும் தலையில் தயிர்ப் பானையையும் சுமந்து வந்த குமராயி, ஒருநாள்... கருவுற்றாள். ஊரே திகைத்தது. கூடியது. இவளை வசைபாடியது. பின்னே... திருமணமாகாதவள் கர்ப்பம் எனில்..?! ‘யார் காரணம்?’ என கேள்வி கேட்டு துளைத்தெடுத்தனர். கூட்டத்தை ஏறிட்டவள், தைரியமாக, நிதானமாக சொன்னாள் ‘’இது, இறைவன் என் பக்திக்குத் தந்த பரிசு!’

ஊர்மக்கள் கைகொட்டிச் சிரித்தனர். ‘கடவுளாவது... பரிசாவது...’ என கேலி பேசினர். இதில் ஆத்திரமுற்ற குமராயி, விறுவிறுவென காவிரிக் கரைக்குச் சென்றவள், அங்கே... அவள் கட்டிய கோயிலுக்குள் நுழைந்தாள். மொத்தக் கூட்டமும் பின்தொடர்ந்தது. எதுவும் புரியாமல் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் பார்க்க, அம்பாளின் சந்நிதிக்குச் சென்றவள், திரும்பிப் பார்த்தாள்; ‘நான் போயிட்டு வரேன்’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு, சந்நிதிக்குள் நுழைந்தாள். அம்பாளுடன் இரண்டறக் கலந்தாள். மறைந்தாள்! இதனால் சிவனாருக்கு குமரீஸ்வரர் என்றும் அம்பிகைக்கு குமராம்பிகை என்றும் திருநாமங்கள் அமைந்தது. ஆம்... இங்கே குடிகொண்டிருக்கும் சிவனாரின் திருநாமம் - ஸ்ரீஅசலதீபேஸ்வரர்; அம்பிகை - ஸ்ரீமதுகரவேணி அம்பாள்!

அதென்ன அசலதீபேஸ்வரர்? சலனம் என்றால் அசைவது. அசலனம் என்றால் அசையாமல் இருப்பது. இங்கே... கருவறையில் உள்ள தீபம் ஒன்று, அசையாமல் எரிந்தபடி ஒளி வீசிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது (குமராயி ஏற்றிய திருவிளக்கு என்பாரும் உண்டு). இதனால், ஸ்வாமிக்கு ஸ்ரீஅசலதீபேஸ்வரர் எனும் திருநாமம் உண்டானதாம். மிகுந்த வரப்பிரசாதி இவர்!

காசியில் ஸ்ரீவிஸ்வநாதர் சந்நிதியில் இறைவனை தரிசித்து விட்டு அப்படியே திரும்பினால், புண்ணிய கங்கை நதியை தரிசிக்கலாம். இதே போல், அசலதீபேஸ்வரரை தரிசித்து விட்டு, சந்நிதியில் இருந்தபடியே காவிரி நதியை வணங்கலாம்! இதுபோல் வழிபட... முன்வினை யாவும் நீங்கி, நிம்மதியும் அமைதியும் பொங்க வாழலாம் என்பது ஐதீகம்!

பீஜாவாப மகரிஷி, நெரூர் சதாசிவ பிரம்மேந்திராள் முதலான மகான்கள் பலரும் வழிபட்ட தலம்... மோகனூர் ஸ்ரீஅசலதீபேஸ்வரர் ஆலயம் (ஆலயத்துக்கு எதிர்க் கரையில் சதாசிவ பிரம்மேந்திராளின் அதிஷ்டானம் அமைந்துள்ளது).

பீஜாவாப மகரிஷி என்பவர், இங்கே... காவிரிக் கரையில் கடும் தவம் செய்து சிவலிங்கத்தை பூஜை செய்து வந்தாராம்! பரணி தீபத் திருநாளில், இங்கே சிவனாருக்கு தீபம் ஏற்றி வழிபட்டதும், அப்படியே வானில் பறந்தபடி திருவண்ணாமலைக்குச் சென்று அண்ணாமலையாருக்கும் தீபம் ஏற்றி வழிபட்டு வணங்கியதும் மோகனூருக்கு திரும்புவாராம்! எனவே, இன்றைக்கும் திருக்கார்த்திகை தீபத் திருவிழா இங்கே விமரிசையாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. காசிக்கு நிகரான தலம், திருவண்ணாமலைக்கு நிகரான தலம் எனப் போற்றப்படுகிறது.

அம்பாள் ஸ்ரீமதுகரவேணி அம்பாள் குறித்த கதையை விவரித்தார் அர்ச்சகர்.

மாம்பழப் பிரச்னையில் முருகப் பெருமான் கோபமாகி, கிளம்பினார் அல்லவா? இதில் பதறித் துடித்த பார்வதிதேவி, மைந்தனை தடுத்து நிறுத்த... பின்னாலேயே வந்தார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் உணர்ச்சி மேலிட, ‘மகனே நில்!’ என்று அன்னையார் சொல்ல... நின்று திரும்பிப் பார்த்தார் முருகன். இதில், பெற்ற மனம் குளிர்ந்தது. உணர்ச்சி மேலிட மார்பகத்தில் இருந்து தாய்ப்பால் பெருகி வழிந்தது. காவிரியில் கலந்தது! ஆகவே இங்கே பக்தர்களுக்கு, பிள்ளை வரம் தந்து அருளுகிறாள் ஸ்ரீமதுகரவேணி அம்பாள்! ‘மகனே நில்...’ என்று சொல்ல, ஸ்ரீமுருகன் நின்றதால், இந்த ஊர் மகனூர் எனப்பட்டு, பின்னர் மோகனூர் என்றானதாம்!

சாந்நித்தியம் நிறைந்த கோயில். இங்கே... பீஜாவாப மகரிஷியின் சிற்பமும் உண்டு; ஸ்ரீசதாசிவ பிரம்மேந்திராளின் திருப் பாதங்களை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்த சந்நிதியும் உள்ளது.
