 State – Tamil Nadu.

 The sages came in search of the best place to do penance.  No place satisfies them.  In search of this, they came to an area where there were huge arched trees.  The aroma of the willow leaf wafted through the air.  Considering Sivadam as the best place to do penance, they started doing penance in this place with pleasure.  Eason rejoiced that the sages had repented in that place for many years, and emerged from the underworld in the form of a linga.  The sages were amazed to see that the Shiva lingam had come to the planet by splitting the underworld.  They started worshiping with that lingam.

 Rama was contemplating not knowing the way how to recover Sita from Ravana.  For this he sought the advice of Agathi who knew Ravana well.  “The wasp feeds on its young, removes the locust's wings and gives it alive to its young.  The wasp knows that if it eats a dead locust, the toxins in its body will affect its young.  Who but God could have given that mind to a wasp.  Before the wasp was created, the locust was first created by God as the locust's food.  Thus, before any life is born, the Lord has done what is necessary for that life in this world to be born into the world.  So Rama… Trust Aesan without worrying about anything.  Everything will go well. ”Sage Agathi gave blessings to Rama.  Before meeting Ravana in battle, Raman came to worship Somnath Easwara in the Vilvak forest and seek his blessings.  He was accompanied by ape warriors.  Rama was worshiping Someswara in the forest.  The ape warriors were hungry because it had been going on for several days.  "Rama has brought you into this forest where there is not even drinking water," they began to shout in anger and fainting.  Rama asked Easwara for help to satisfy their hunger.  Someswarar also gave them a pond for water and food in this town.

 In the city of Kanyakucham in Panchala, King Sthulakarnan crowned his son and went to perform penance in the forest.  Then Vilvak visited the beautiful Shiva lingam in the forest and touched it.  Then a shrill voice was heard in the sky.  "Build a temple for Isan in this area and dedicate this Shiva lingam in that temple," said the Asari voice.  He destroyed the forest and made it a city, as Azari said.  There he built a temple and consecrated Ilinga.  As well as settled people in the area.

 That is Manamadurai.

 If you worship Somnath in Manamadurai, you will get great Sivayoga.

 Chandran, the husband of twenty-seven star angels, once showed extra love for Rogini only because of his influence and ignored other wives.  All the other wives were so distressed that they appealed to their father, Datsun, to show love only to one of her husband's sisters.  Angered by this, he cursed the moon for his leprosy.  As a result, Chandran suffered from syphilis and his art began to deteriorate over time.

 Thus the frightened moon asked Agathi for a way to remove his curse and regain his old glory.  He built a temple for the illustrious Ilingam on the west bank of the river, which flows from north to south, and blessed it, saying that he would get old enough to worship him.  In the area where the present temple is located, the moon was delighted to see that the ilingam was located, as Agathiyar had said, and set up a solitary theertham, bathed in the theertham and the vaigai, and continued to worship Shiva with his arts, adorned with archery leaves.  Lord Shiva, who was pleased with his devotion, gave him a vision and blessed him with a cure for his illness.  Also, accepting Chandran's request, he himself appears in the title as Somnathar with Umayyad Anandavalli.

 Later, the temple was destroyed by the flood and by the grace of the Lord, Maharaja Sthulakarna rebuilt the temple.  Here Lord Shiva bestows blessings on the white self.

 Panchanilai Tower, The royal tower of the temple is carved to depict the miraculous events that took place at this place.

 Blessing under the edifice.  Moon is a marvelous place where two of his wives can be seen on the same stone in solitude.  During his festival, Lord Shiva changed the rope to turn the foxes into gifts at this place for his servant Manikkavasaka.

 Rama, on the advice of Agathiyar, came here and worshiped the Lord and then set up Sethu, conquered Sri Lanka and went to Ayodhya to be crowned.  When Rama fought with Ravana, it was the place where the Vanarachenai's starved.  Balarama came to Ithalat, worshiped Ilingauth in the Vilva forest and absolved himself of his sins after killing Surana during his pilgrimage.  On the western side, there is a statue of Lord Shiva with a scepter and a scepter.

 Festival:

 The annual festival is celebrated for 10 days in Chittirai and 10 days in Aadi.  There is a special puja on the days of Arutradarisanam, Annabhishekam and Pitosha.

 Prayer:

 Bathing in the Chandrapushkarani Tirtha at this temple  melts the mind and prays to the Lord to cure leprosy.

 The marriage ban is lifted to wear the evening gown worn by Swami on Aadithabasu Day.  Blessings are available.

முனிவர்கள் தவம் செய்ய, சிறந்த இடத்தை தேடி கொண்டு வந்தார்கள். எந்த இடமும் அவர்களுக்கு திருப்தியாக இல்லை. இப்படியே தேடித்தேடி சென்றதில், மிகப் பெரிய வில்வ மரங்கள் படர்ந்து விரிந்து இருந்தப் பகுதிக்கு வந்தார்கள். வில்வ இலையின் நறுமணம் காற்றில் தென்றலாய் வீசியது. சிவதவம் செய்ய சிறந்த இடமென எண்ணி, மகிழ்ந்து இந்த இடத்தில் தவம் செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். பல வருடங்கள் அந்த இடத்தில் முனிவர்கள் தவம் செய்ததால் ஈசன் மகிழ்ந்து, பாதாளத்திலிருந்து லிங்க வடிவில் வெளிப்பட்டார். பாதாளத்தை பிளந்து பூலோகத்தில் சிவலிங்கம் வந்திருப்பதை கண்ட முனிவர்கள் ஆச்சரியம் அடைந்தார்கள். அந்த லிங்கத்தை வைத்து பூஜிக்க தொடங்கினார்கள்.

இராவணனிடம் இருந்து எப்படி சீதையை மீட்பது என்று வழி தெரியாமல் இராமன் சிந்தித்து கொண்டு இருந்தார். இதற்கு இராவணனை பற்றி நன்கு அறிந்த அகத்தியரிடம் ஆலோசனை கேட்டார். “குளவி தன் குட்டி குளவியின் உணவுக்கு, வெட்டுகிளியின் சிறகுகளை நீக்கி, உயிரோடு அதை தன் குட்டிகளுக்கு கொடுக்கும். இறந்த வெட்டுகிளியைச் சாப்பிட்டால் அதன் உடலில் உள்ள விஷதன்மை தன் குட்டிகளை பாதிக்கும் என்று குளவிக்கு தெரியும். இறைவனைத் தவிர வேறு யார் அந்த புத்தியை குளவிக்கு தந்திருக்க முடியும். குளவி இனத்தை படைப்பதற்கு முன்னதாகவே அதற்கு வெட்டுகிளிதான் உணவு என்று வெட்டுகிளியை முதலில் படைத்தான் இறைவன். இப்படியாக, எந்த ஒரு ஜீவன் பிறப்பதற்கு முன்னதாகவே அந்த ஜீவனுக்கு இவ்வூலகில் தேவையானவற்றை இறைவன் செய்து விட்டுத்தான் பூலோகத்தில் பிறக்க வைக்கிறான். ஆகவே இராமா… நீ எதைப் பற்றியும் கவலை கொள்ளாமல் ஈசனை நம்பு. எல்லாம் நன்மையாகவே நடக்கும்.“ என்று இராமனுக்கு ஆசி வழங்கினார் அகத்திய முனிவர். இராவணனைப் போரில் சந்திப்பதற்கு முன்னதாக வில்வக் காட்டில் இருக்கும் சோமநாத ஈஸ்வரரை வணங்கி ஆசி பெற வந்தார் ராமன். அவருடன் வானர வீரர்களும் வந்தார்கள். காட்டில் சோமேஸ்வரரை இராமன் வணங்கி கொண்டு இருந்தார். பல நாட்கள் நடந்து வந்ததால் வானர வீரர்களுக்கு பசி ஏற்பட்டது. “குடிக்கத் தண்ணீர் கூட இல்லாத இந்த காட்டுக்குள் இராமர் அழைத்து வந்துவிட்டாரே” என்று பசி மயக்கத்தால், கோபத்தில் சத்தம் போட ஆரம்பித்தார்கள். அவர்களின் பசியை போக்க ஈஸ்வரரிடம் உதவி கேட்டார் இராமர். சோமேஸ்வரரும் அவர்களுக்கு இந்த ஊரில்தான் தண்ணீருக்கான குளத்தையும், உணவையும் கொடுத்தார்.

பாஞ்சால நாட்டில் கன்னியாகுச்சம் என்ற நகரில் ஸ்தூலகர்ணன் என்ற மன்னன் தன் மகனுக்கு முடிசூட்டிவிட்டு காட்டில் தவம் செய்ய சென்றார். அப்போது வில்வக் காட்டில் அழகான சிவலிங்கத்தை தரிசித்து, அதை தொட்டு பார்த்தார். அப்போது வானத்தில் ஒரு அசரீரி குரல் கேட்டது. “இந்த பகுதியில் நீ ஈசனுக்கு கோயிலை எழுப்பி, இந்த சிவலிங்கத்தை அந்த திருக்கோயிலில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்” என்று அசரீரி குரல் கூறியது. அசரீரி கூறியது போல் காட்டை அழித்து நகரமாக்கினார். அங்கு திருக்கோயிலை கட்டி இலிங்கத்தை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்தார். அத்துடன் அந்த பகுதியில் மக்களையும் குடியமர்த்தினார்.

அதுவே மானாமதுரை.

மானாமதுரையில் இருக்கும் சோமநாதரை வில்வதினால் அர்ச்சனை செய்து வணங்கினால் பெரும் சிவயோகம் உண்டாகும்.

இருபத்‌தேழு நட்சத்திர தே‌வதையர்களின் கணவனான சந்திரன், ஒரு முறை தனது ஊழ்வினை காரணமாக ‌ரோகிணியின் மீது மட்டும் கூடுதலான அன்பு காட்டி, பிற மனைவியரைப் புறக்கணித்து வந்தான். இதனால் மற்ற மனைவியர் அனைவரும் மிகுந்த துன்பமுற்று, தம் கணவன் சசோதரி ஒருத்தியிடம் மட்டும் அன்பு காட்டி வருவதை தங்களது தந்தை தட்சனிடம் முறையிட்டனர். இதனால் கடும்கோபங்‌க‌ொண்ட அவன், தனது தவ வலிமையால் சந்திரனுக்கு சயரோகம்(தொழுநோய்) பீடிக்கும் படி சாபம் கொடுத்தான். இதனால் சந்திரன் சயரோக நோயினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு நாள்பட அவனது கலைகள் சிறிது சிறிதாகத் ‌தேயத்‌தொடங்கின.

இதனால் அச்சமுற்ற சந்திரன் தனது சாபம் நீங்கி பழைய பொலிவு பெற்றிட, அகத்தியரிடம் வழி கேட்டான். அவர் வடக்கில் இருந்து தெற்கு நோக்கிப் பாயும் நதியின் மேற்கு கரையில் அமைந்த வில்வவனத்தில் அருட்காட்சி தரும் இலிங்கத்திற்குத் தனியே கோயில் எழுப்பி, பூஜிக்க அவனது பிணி தீர்ந்து பழைய நிலை கிட்டும் என கூறி அருளினார். தற்போதைய கோயில் வீற்றிருக்கும் பகுதியில், அகத்தியர் கூறியது போல இலிங்கம் அமைந்திருப்பதைக் கண்ட சந்திரன் பெருமகிழ்வுற்று தனிய‌ே தீர்த்தம் ஒன்றினை அமைத்து அத்தீர்த்தத்திலும், வைகையிலும் நீராடி, சிவன‌ை மனம் உருகி தனது கலைகளினால் ‌தொடர்ந்து பூஜித்து, வில்வ இலைகளால் அர்ச்சனை செய்து வந்தான். அவனது பக்தியில் அகம் மகிழ்ந்த சிவபெருமான் அருட்காட்சியளித்து, அவனது நோயைப் போக்கி அருளினார். மேலும், சந்திரனின் வேண்டுகோளை ஏற்று, அவரே இத்தலத்தில் உமையவள் ஆனந்தவல்லியுடனாய சோமநாதராக காட்சி தருகிறார்.

பிற்காலத்தில் இந்த ‌கோயில் பிரளயத்தால் அழிந்திட, இறைவனின் அருட்கட்டளைப்படி ஸ்தூலகர்ண மகாராஜா மீண்டும் இக்கோயி்லை புதுப்பித்துக் கட்டினார். இங்கு சிவன் வெள்ளை சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக அருள்பாலிக்கிறார்.

பஞ்சநிலை கோபுரம், கோயிலின் ராஜகோபுரத்தில் இத்தலத்தில் நடந்த அற்புத சம்பவங்களை விளக்கும்படியாக சிற்பங்கள் செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

திருதலவிமானத்தின் கீழ் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். சந்திரன் தனிச்சன்னதியில் தனது மனைவியரில் இருவருடன் ஒரே கல்லில் காட்சி தரும் அற்புதத்தலம். சிவபெருமான் தனது திருவிளையாடலின் போது தமது அடியார் மாணிக்கவாசகருக்காக இத்தலத்தில்தான் நரிகளைப் பரிகளாக மாற்றிட கயிறு மாற்றிக்கொடுத்தார்.

இராமர், அகத்தியரின் ஆலோசனைப்படி இங்கு வந்து இறைவனைப் பூஜித்து அதன் பின்பு சேது அமைத்து இலங்கையை வென்று, அயோத்திக்குச் சென்று முடிசூடினார். இராமன் இராவணனுடன் போர் புரிந்த போது, வானரச்சேனைகளின் பசியை போக்கிய தலம். பலராமர் தனது தீர்த்த யாத்திரையின் போது சூரனைக் கொன்றதால் ஏற்பட்ட பாவத்தினை, இத்தலத்திற்கு வந்து வில்வ வனத்தில் இருந்த இலிங்க‌த்தினைப் பூஜித்து பாவவிமோசனம் பெற்று பின் துவாரகை மீண்டார். சிவபெருமானுக்கு மேற்குப்பகுதியில் விருஷபம், சூலத்துடன் கூடிய சிலை உள்ளது தனிச்சிறப்பாக உள்ளது.

திருவிழா :

சித்திரையில் 10 நாள் மற்றும் ஆடியில் 10 நாட்கள் வருடத்திருவிழா கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. ஆருத்ராதரிசனம், அன்னாபிஷேகம், பிரதோஷ நாட்களிலும் சிறப்பு பூஜை உண்டு.

பிரார்த்தனை :

இத்தலத்தில் உள்ள சந்திரபுஷ்கரணி தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி இறைவனை மனம் உருகி வேண்டிக்கொள்ள ‌தொழுநோய்கள் குணமாகின்றன.

ஆடித்தபசு தினத்தில் சுவாமிக்கு அணிந்த மாலையை அணிந்து ‌கொள்ள திருமணத்தடை நீங்குகிறது. புத்திரபாக்கியம் கிடைக்கிறது.

நேர்த்திக்கடன் : வேண்டிய காரியங்கள் நிறைவேறிட சுவாமிக்கு சிறப்பு அபிஷேகங்கள் மட்டும் செய்யப்படுகின்றன.

வழிகாட்டி:

மதுரையில் இருந்து இராமநாதபுரம் செல்லும் பிரதான சாலையில் 50கி.மீ.தொலைவில் மானாமதுரை என்ற தலம் அமைந்துள்ளது. இங்கு சோமநாதர் திருக்கோயில் உள்ளது.
