 Mammiyur Temple

The legendary history extends to the consecration of the famous Sree Guruvayur Temple - It was the final phase of Dwaparayuga. The great Deluge has submerged Sree Krishna's abode Dwaraka and the Lord, as a playful child, was frolicking on a banyan leaf tossed about by the surging waters. Devaguru Brihaspathi and wind god Vayu stumble upon him where upon the Lord himself handed over to them the idol of the Supreme Lord that he has been worshipping at Dwaraka, with instructions to have it installed and consecrated at an appropriate spot on earth.

Guru and Vayu then descended on the banks of a sprawing lake Rudratheertha rendered holy by Lord Shiva who has been doing penance there for ages. Realizing the purpose of the visit Lord Shiva suggested the consecration there itself on the bank of Rudratheertha and obligingly moved over to a near by location on the other side of the Rudhra theertha.

The place where Guru and Vayu consecrated the idol of Lord Krishna became GURUVAYOOR and the site that Lord Shiva chose for himself and his consort Sree Parvathy became Mahimayur, mahima evolving out of the status bestowed on Lord Shiva for voluntarily relinquishing his initial abode to accommodate Lord Krishna. This in course of time got colloquialised as MAMMIYUR.

மம்மியூர் கோவில் (Mammiyoor Temple) அல்லது மம்மியூர் மகாதேவ க்ஷேத்ரம் என்பது தென் இந்தியாவில் உள்ள கேரளத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள குருவாயூர் கோவிலின் அருகாமையில் உள்ள ஒரு சிவபெருமானை (பரமசிவன்) கோவிலாகும். குருவாயூரப்பனை வழிபட வரும் பக்தர்கள் மம்மியூர் சிவன் கோவில் தர்சனம் பெறவேண்டும் என்பதே ஐதீகம், அப்படி செய்வதால் குருவாயூர் கோவிலுக்கு சென்றதன் முழு புண்ணிய பலமும் அந்த பக்தருக்கு கிடைக்கப்பெறும் என்பதே இந்துக்களின் நம்பிக்கையாகும்.

வாயுவின் உதவியோடு பிரகஸ்பதி (குரு) உலகம் முழுவது அலைந்து கிருஷ்ணரின் பாதள அஞ்சன விக்ரகத்தை செய்ய மிகவும் புனிதமான மற்றும் பொருத்தமான தலத்தைத் தேடினார். அப்போது பரசுராமரின் வேண்டுகோள்படி கேரளா வந்தனர் வாயுவும் குருவும். அப்போது ருத்ர தீர்த்தத்தில் நீருக்குள் சிவபெருமான் தவம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.அவர் வெளியே வந்து தாம் தவம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த இடம் மிகப்புனிதமானது என்றும் அங்கே ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளாகத் தாம் தவம் செய்து வருதலையும், தாம் ருத்ர கீதையை உபதேசம் செய்த தலமும் அதுவே என்று கூறி, கிருஷ்ணரின் விக்கிரகத்தை அங்கேயே வைக்கலாம் என்று உறுதி செய்து அருளினார். 

அனைவரையும் ஆசிர்வதித்து விட்டு சிவபெருமான் மம்மியூருக்குச் சென்றுவிட்டார். எனவே குருவாயூர் குருவாயூரப்பன் கோயிலுக்கு வரும் பக்தர்கள் மம்மியூர் சிவபெருமானையும் வழிபட்டபின்னரே வழிபாடு பூரணமாகின்றது.

மம்மியூர் கோவிலை கால்நடையாக பத்தே நிமிடங்களில் குருவாயூர் கோவிலில் இருந்து அடையலாம்.

கோவிலுக்கு உள்ளே செல்வதற்கு இந்துக்களுக்கு மட்டுமே அனுமதி வழங்கப்படுகிறது.

இந்தக் கோவிலானது குருவாயூரில் இருந்து புன்னத்தூர் கோட்டைக்கு செல்லும் வழியில் கொட்டபடிக்கு அருகே சுமார் ஒரு கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில் உள்ளது. மிகவும் அருகாமையில் காணப்படும் நகரங்கள்: குருவாயூர், குன்னம்குளம், சாவக்காடு போன்றவையாகும்.
