Mahashivrathri is grandly celebrated in the temple in February–March.

Gorakka Siddha came to this temple on his pilgrimage to Shiva temples. He stayed in a mutt here where many devotees were also staying. While he woke up at midnight, he was shocked to see a woman sleeping by his side and her sari on his hands. As a repentance, he cut off his hands and stayed in the mutt for some time. He bathed in Chandra Pushkarini and worshipped Gnanapureeswarar and Pushpavalli. Pleased with the devotion of Gorakkar, Lord appeared before him and restored his hands. As the hands were cut here, the place is called Korakkai and as the Siddha worshipped with short hands (after being cut), it is called Kurukkai. Fnally, it is now Korukkai.

Two demons Madhu and Kaidapa snatched the Vedas from Brahmma and hid them under the sea. They were redeemed by Lord Vishnu and handed back to Brahmma. Yet Brahmma could not perform His creation job efficiently. As advised by Lord Vishnu, Brahmma worshipped Lord Shiva here and regained Gnana–wisdom on Avittam star day in the month of Aavani and resumed His creation job efficiently. As the Lord imparted Gnana to Brahamma, he is praised as Gnanapureeswarar.

The place assumed Avittam star importance, as Lord Brahmma attained wisdom on this day. It is advised that Avittam star people visit this temple as often as they could or on the particular star day or birthday or on the star day falling in the month of Avani (August–September) and follow a step by step pradakshina which would favourably change their destiny totally. Devotees pray here for the education of their children, business development mental peace. It is advised that the step by step pradakshina should be done by pressing the feet so that the prints should be recorded in the temple soil. The temple was built during the period of Kulothunga III.
