Kanaka Durga Temple, Konerikuppam, Kanchipuram

Kanaka Durga Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga located in Konerikuppam, an outskirt of Kanchipuram City in Kanchipuram Taluk in Kanchipuram District of Tamil Nadu. Kanaka Durga is considered as the guardian deity of Kanchipuram. The Temple is believed to be built in the 19^th Century.

The Temple

This temple is facing towards east with an entrance arch on the southern side. The entrance arch has stucco images of Goddess Durga flanked by Vinayaga and Lord Murugan with his consorts. The Sanctum Sanctorum consists of Sanctum, Ardha Mandapam and Mukha Mandapam. Presiding Deity is called as Kanaga Durga. Her idol is housed in the sanctum.

She is believed to be Swayambhu Idol. She is in sitting posture, with her left leg on the buffalo, representing Mahishasura and her right leg on the floor. A lion can be seen on her right side and a demon on the left side of the idol. She holds chakra, Shanga, trisula, umbrella, bow, shield, pasa, sword and arrow in her hands. One of her hand rests on her thigh.

Vaishnavi, Brahmi, Kaumari, Varahi and Maheshwari are the Koshta idols located around the sanctum walls. Utsava idol of Kanaga Durga is housed in a separate east facing shrine next to the sanctum. There is a shrine for Ishta Siddhi Vinayaga in the temple premises. Naga idol can be seen under the Peepal tree behind the Ishta Siddhi Vinayaga Shrine.

There is a Thiruvilakku Mandapam, next to Ishta Siddhi Vinayaga Shrine. It houses a goddess idol. Devotees light Deepas here during Rahu Kala Pooja. There is a Navagraha Mandapam in the temple premises. All the Navagrahas are housed in this Mandapam. Stucco images of Surya in chariot surrounded by all the other planets (Grahas) can be seen on top of the Mandapam.

There is a shrine for Ashta Lakshmi in the temple premises. It houses idols of Veera Lakshmi, Santhana Lakshmi, Maha Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi and Vidya Lakshmi. Sub shrine of Baktha Anjaneya can be seen at the entrance of the shrine. Putru Koil can be seen at the eastern end of the temple premises. Snake Pit, head of Goddess and Naga idol can be seen in this shrine.

The Temple remains open from 6:00 A.M to 12:00 Noon and 4:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M.

Connectivity

The Temple is located at about 2 Kms from Kanchipuram Railway Station 2.5 Kms from Kanchipuram Bus Stand and 2.5 Kms from Kanchipuram East Railway Station. The temple is situated close to the Kanchipuram Sankara University and is located just at the entrance to the Kanchipuram town while coming from Chennai. Buses from Kanchipuram to Enathur stops at the entrance of this temple. Kanchipuram is located at about 18 Kms from Walajabad, 31 Kms from Sriperumbudur, 40 Kms from Chengalpattu, 60 Kms from Chennai Airport, 67 Kms from Mahabalipuram and 72 Kms from Chennai.

By Road:

Kanchipuram is most easily accessible by road. The Chennai – Bangalore National Highway, NH 4 passes the outskirts of the city. Daily bus services are provided by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation to and from Chennai, Bangalore, Villupuram, Salem, Tirupati, Thiruthani, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Coimbatore, Tindivanam and Pondicherry. There are two major bus routes to Chennai, one connecting via Poonamallee and the other via Tambaram. 

The Tamil Nadu state government operated transport corporation runs buses from Kanchipuram to most major towns in Tamil Nadu. Buses from Chennai leave for Kanchipuram every fifteen minutes from the Koyambedu interstate bus terminal. There is also an air-conditioned bus service numbered Z576 from 5.00 AM to 6.00 PM, which departs from the T-Nagar bus terminal every hour. Buses from Bangalore leave for Kanchipuram seven times a day.

By Train:

The city is also connected to the railway network through the Kanchipuram railway station. The Chengalpattu – Arakkonam railway line passes through Kanchipuram and travellers can access services to those destinations. Daily trains are provided to Pondicherry and Tirupati, and there is a weekly express train to Madurai and a bi-weekly express train to Nagercoil. Two passenger trains from both sides of Chengalpattu and Arakkonam pass via Kanchipuram. 

By Air:

Nearest domestic as well as international airport is Chennai International Airport.

தமிழ்நாட்டின் காஞ்சிபுரம் மாவட்டத்தில் காஞ்சிபுரம் தாலுக்காவில் உள்ள காஞ்சிபுரம் நகரின் புறநகரில் உள்ள கோனேரிகுப்பத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள கனக துர்கை கோயில் துர்கா தேவிக்காக அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட கோயிலாகும். காஞ்சிபுரத்தின் காவல் தெய்வமாக கனக துர்க்கை கருதப்படுகிறார். இந்தக் கோயில் 19ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் கட்டப்பட்டதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

புராண முக்கியத்துவம்

இக்கோயில் தெற்கு நோக்கி நுழைவாயில் வளைவுடன் கிழக்கு நோக்கி உள்ளது. நுழைவாயில் வளைவில் துர்கா தேவியின் சிற்பங்கள் உள்ளன, அவை விநாயகர் மற்றும் முருகன் அவரது துணைவியருடன் உள்ளன. கருவறை சன்னதி, அர்த்த மண்டபம் மற்றும் முக மண்டபம் ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. மூலவர் கனக துர்க்கை என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். அவளுடைய சிலை கருவறையில் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவள் சுயம்பு சிலை என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. அவள் உட்கார்ந்த தோரணையில், மகிஷாசுரனைக் குறிக்கும் வகையில் எருமையின் மீது இடது காலை வைத்தும், அவளது வலது கால் தரையில் உள்ளது. சிலையின் வலது பக்கத்தில் சிங்கமும், இடது பக்கத்தில் அரக்கனும் காணப்படுகின்றன. சக்கரம், சங்கா, திரிசூலம், குடை, வில், கேடயம், பாசம், வாள், அம்பு ஆகியவற்றைக் கையில் ஏந்துகிறாள். அவளது கைகளில் ஒன்று அவள் தொடையின் மீது பதிந்துள்ளது. வைஷ்ணவி, பிராமி, கௌமாரி, வராஹி மற்றும் மகேஸ்வரி ஆகிய கோஷ்ட சிலைகள் கருவறைச் சுவரைச் சுற்றி அமைந்துள்ளன. கனக துர்க்கையின் உற்சவ சிலை கருவறைக்கு அடுத்ததாக கிழக்கு நோக்கிய தனி சன்னதியில் உள்ளது. கோவில் வளாகத்தில் இஷ்ட சித்தி விநாயகருக்கு சன்னதி உள்ளது. இஷ்ட சித்தி விநாயகர் சன்னதிக்கு பின்புறம் உள்ள ஆலமரம் மரத்தடியில் நாக சிலை உள்ளது. இஷ்ட சித்தி விநாயகர் சன்னதியை அடுத்து திருவிளக்கு மண்டபம் உள்ளது. அதில் ஒரு அம்மன் சிலை உள்ளது. ராகு கால பூஜையின் போது பக்தர்கள் இங்கு தீபம் ஏற்றி வழிபடுகின்றனர். கோவில் வளாகத்தில் நவக்கிரக மண்டபம் உள்ளது. இந்த மண்டபத்தில் அனைத்து நவக்கிரகங்களும் உள்ளன. மற்ற அனைத்து கிரகங்களால் சூழப்பட்ட தேரில் சூரியனின் சிற்பங்களை மண்டபத்தின் மேல் காணலாம். கோவில் வளாகத்தில் அஷ்ட லட்சுமிகளுக்கான சன்னதி உள்ளது. இதில் வீர லட்சுமி, சந்தான லட்சுமி, மகா லட்சுமி, தான்ய லட்சுமி, தன லக்ஷ்மி, கஜ லக்ஷ்மி, விஜய லக்ஷ்மி மற்றும் வித்யா லக்ஷ்மி சிலைகள் உள்ளன. கோயிலின் நுழைவாயிலில் பக்த ஆஞ்சநேயரின் உபசன்னதியைக் காணலாம். கோயில் வளாகத்தின் கிழக்கு முனையில் புத்ரு கோயில் காணப்படுகிறது. இந்த சன்னதியில் பாம்பு குழி, தேவியின் தலை மற்றும் நாக சிலை ஆகியவற்றைக் காணலாம்.
