Bala Subramanya Temple, Andarkuppam, Thiruvallur

Bala Subramanya Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located at Andarkuppam near Ponneri in Thiruvallur District of Tamilnadu. This an ancient and very popular Murugan temple in this region. This is one of the Murugan temples glorified by Arunagiri Nathar’s Thiruppugazh.

Legends

Andarkuppam:

As he came to this place as a poor little boy (Aandi), the place was called Aandiarkuppam which later changed as Andarkuppam. As Andar means ruler, the name Andarkuppam appears to be an appropriate name.

Lord Murugan taught Pranava to Brahmma:

Subramanya Swamy asked the meaning of Pranava which Brahma was not able to answer and Lord Muruga taught Brahmma about Pranava. We see a small stone outside the sanctum in front of Subramanya Swamy temple which is considered as Brahma. We can see the carving of the story in one of the pillars here in the temple.

Murugan created a spring with his Vel here:

In the past some poor people (Aandi) were worshipping him. A devotee on his pilgrimage stayed here and wanted to have a bath and worship the Lord and asked the Aandis for a river or well. They said there is none such nearby. A little boy came there, took the traveler to a place and punched the earth with Vel at a place. A spring came up and the traveler’s joy knew no bounds. Lord Muruga granted darshan to him and stayed as Lord Balasubramanya.

The Temple

This is a small but very beautiful Temple with nice sculptures. Lord Balasubramanya in standing posture graces the devotees so mercifully without his weapons Vel, Vajram and Shakti. There are two elephants near the Lord. As he is appearing in a royal form, He is called Adhikara Murugan-Murugan with authority. Lord appears as a child in the morning, a youth in midday and as an aged person in the evening.

Lord Brahmma is before the sanctum sanctorum as an oval shaped idol without a form. Only the Kamandalam and Akshamala attributed to him are in the circle. The main vehicle of Lord Muruga is peacock. Among the six army camps attributed to the Lord, he has the elephant as his vahana in Swamimalai, Thiruthani and in the Chennai Kumaran Kundram temples.

In this temple, he has Lion also as his vahana belonging to Mother Shakti along with peacock and it is significant that the Lion is holding the peacock. The Vimana, tower above the sanctum sanctorum is of Ekadala design. Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka graces the devotees in a Shrine on the right side of the sanctum. There are shrines for Lord Kasi Viswanatha, Mother Visalakshi and Lord Nataraja in the prakaram.

Legend of Murugan asking the meaning of Pranava to Brahma is depicted in one of the pillars in the temple. Theertham associated with this Temple is Velayudha Theertham. This is the replica of the moolavar. Note that the hands are not in abhaya mudhra but on the hips showing authority in censuring Brahma. There is a panel showing a Saint   being blessed by Murugan. The legend Andava Kuppam is inscribed at the base of the temple carving in the fresco.

The temple remains open from 6.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Festivals

Chithirai Brahmmotsavam in April-May, Vaikasi Visakam in May-June, Aadi Kruthikai in July-August, Kumara Sashti, Skanda Sashti in October-November, Thai Poosam in January-February and Panguni Uthiram in March-April are the festivals celebrated in the temple. His wedding with Deivanai is celebrated on the fifth day of the Chithirai Brahmmotsavam and with Valli on the 9th day of the festival. Kumara Sashti is celebrated in the month of Karthikai when Muruga was born followed by Laksharchana – chanting the glorious names of the Lord one lakh times.

Singers

Saint Arunagiriar had sung the praise of the Lord in his celebrated Thirupugazh hymns.

Prayers

People pray for senior job positions, to shine in responsible positions they hold and for wise children. Devotees perform abishek to Lord Muruga with milk and adore Him with sandal paste. The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Andarkuppam Bus Stop, 3 Kms from Thatchoor, 7 Kms from Ponneri, 15 Kms from Gummudipoondi, 17 Kms from Thirupalaivanam, 26 Kms from Pulicat, 12 Kms from Devadanam, 16 Kms from Minjur, 52 Kms from Tiruvallur, 35 Kms from Avadi and 34 Kms from Chennai. The Temple can be reached from Chennai easily. Take Chennai Kolkata Highway towards Nellore, take the right turn at the Ponneri Junction -Thachchur Koot Road and you will see the road to Andar Kuppam on the left in half a Km. The temple is at the end of the road. Nearest Railway Stations are located at Ponneri (7 Kms), Gummudipoondi (14 Kms), Chennai Central (34 Kms) and Egmore (35 Kms). Nearest Airport is located at Chennai (47 Kms).

முருகன் குழந்தை யாகவும், இளைஞ ராகவும், முதிய வராகவும் மூன்று விதமான வடிவங்களில் பக்தர்களுக்கு காட்சி தருகிறார்.

பால பருவத்தில் உலகத்தை சுற்றி வந்த முருகன் கருணை யாலும், வீரத்தாலும் உலகை ஆண்டு   ஊரில் குடிகொண்டதால் ஆண்டார் குப்பம் என பெயர் பெற்றதாக தல வரலாறு கூறுகிறது.

கைலாயம் சென்ற பிரம்மன் அங்கிருந்த முருகனை கவனிக்காமல் சென்றபோது, பிரம்மனை அழைத்த முருகன் நீங்கள் யார்? என கேட்க நான் படைக்கும் தொழிலை செய்யும் பிரம்மன் என அதிகார தோரணை யுடன் பதிலளித்தார். அவரது அகங் காரத்தை போக்க நினைத்த முருகன் படைக்கும் தொழிலை எதன் அடிப்படையில் செய்கிறீர்கள்? என கேள்வி எழுப்ப ஓம் என கூறி அதன் பொருள் தெரியாமல் நின்றார்.

அதனால் பிரம்மனை முருகன் சிறையில் அடைத்ததாக கூறப்படு கிறது. இரண்டு கைகளை இடுப்பில் வைத்து அதிகாரத் துடன் பிரம்மனை கேள்வி கேட்ட வடிவிலேயே இத்திருத் தலத்தில் பக்தர்களுக்கு முருகப்பெருமான் காட்சி தருகிறார்.

இதேபோன்று முருகனை தரிசிக்க வந்த பக்தர் ஒருவர் இங்கு நீராட இடம் உள்ளதா என ஆண்டி கோலத்தில் இருந்த சிறுவனிடம் கேட்க தன் கையில் இருந்த வேலாயுதத் தால் தரையில் குத்திய போது நீர் பெருக் கெடுத்ததாம். ஆண்டி வடிவில் இருந்த சிறுவன் முருகப்பெருமானாக காட்சி தந்ததை அடுத்து வேலா யுதத்தில் உருவான தீர்த்தம் வேலாயுத தீர்த்தம் என அழைக்கப் படுகிறது.

கிளியாய் மாறிய அருணகிரி நாதர் பாடல் பெற்ற திருத்தலங் களில் ஒன்றாக இத்தலம் இருக்கிறது. கிழக்கு நோக்கி பாலசுப்பிர மணியராக நின்ற கோலத்தில்  சுவாமிக்கு இட வலமாக வள்ளி தெய்வானை என இரண்டு தேவியர்களின் சன்னதிகள் அமைந் துள்ளன.
