Subramanya Swamy Temple, Marungoor, Kanyakumari

Subramanya Swamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located at Marungoor Village in Kanyakumari District of Tamilnadu. Marungoor, also spelt Marungur, is located near Suchindrum in Kanyakumari District. In most of the Murugan temples, Lord Murugan can be seen on peacock but here Lord Murugan can be seen on a horse.

It is believed that when Sage Agastya came down to Podhigai malai, he has installed this Murugan here.

Indra’s horse, Uchchaisiravas attained salvation here:

After Indran got cleansed from the curse of Sage Gowthama at Suchindrum temple, Indra’s horse, Uchchaisiravas also wanted salvation. It asked the same with Suchindrum Lord Shiva. He directed the horse of Indran to go to Marungoor and worship the Murugan there for salvation. It came along with Sunandhan and worshiped Murugan here and got salvation. Since the horse got salvation, this place is also called Vaaji Puram.

Thirumalai Amararpathy kaaththa Perumal Subramanya Swami:

Since Lord Murugan of this this place saved Indran from danger and hence he is called as Marungoor Thirumalai Amararpathy kaaththa Perumal Subramanya Swami.

It is believed that after doing the Artha Jaama Pooja at Suchindrum temple, Indran comes to this place, takes bath in Amaravathy Kulam here and worships Aabhaththu Kaatha Devi and Murugan here. 

History

Idai-Aattru-Mangalam is the ancient name of this place, since this place had 2 rivers flowing around. Some of the Tamil Poets of the Sangam period – like Marungoor Kizhaar Kannannar, Marungoor Baahai Chaathan Bhoodhanaar, Marungoor Pattinaththu Sendhan Kumaranaar are from this place. In ancient times Marungoor village was a place for iron and steel industry. The soil was rich in iron and it was extracted and weapons were made. Steel was exported from this area. Over the centuries, the reserves were lost. (ref: Travancore State Manual – Vol – 2 – Page 635)

This was a war bastion with huge sheds for horses, armour houses, fort. The emergency armour room is now called as Aabhaththu kaaththa Veera Nangai Temple. This is the family deity of the local chieftains (small kingdoms). The Govt seal had a peacock and roaster as symbol and has “Thirukkai Vela Sengundham Thunai” as slogan. During Navarathri times, they had special functions here and celebrated Durgashtami in the Devi temple here and all weapons were kept in puja and was taken on parade on the 10th day, along with Palli Vettai ceremony.

The last king was Sahala kalai Marthanda Varma till AD 1504. He couldn’t rule further. He kept his swords and weapons at the feet of Devi here and even now the royal function has weapons placed in display. In 1570, the hands of the Murugan statue broke off. The king tried to change the stone idol. But the God came in his dream and asked him not to replace the statue. Instead he was asked to fit the Panchaloka (alloy of 5 metals) hands. The king did so. (Ref: Travancore State Manual – Vol 2, Pg 294-295). The same can be seen even now. 

The Temple

The Temple is situated atop a small hillock. This temple area is called as Kumarapuram Thoppur. Because of Kumaran's (Subramanya Swamy) name. Presiding Deity is called as Marungoor Thirumalai Amararpathy kaaththa Perumal Subramanya Swami. Presiding Deity graces the devotees with his consorts Valli and Devasena. The Thiruvasi, prabhai and the statue are all sculptured out of a single stone. This is the uniqueness of this idol.

In most of the Murugan temples, Lord Murugan can be seen on peacock but here Lord Murugan can be seen on a horse. Lord Murugan has been worshipped as Lord Siva, Brahmma and Vishnu during Kandha Shasti. Shrines for Kulasekara Vinayakar, Sangili Bhoothathan, Kasi and Viswanathar can be seen in this temple. There is a tunnel connecting the sanctum sanctorum of both the Suchindrum and Marungoor Temples, used during ancient times, during the times of war.

Festivals

Chithirai Thirukalyanam, Tirukarthikai, Kandha Shashti and Soora Samharam are the famous festivals at this temple.

Prayers

For little children, festival for giving first rice food after birth was conducted here. Six types of rices are cooked and offered to Lord Muruga specially during this festival.

The Temple is located at about 16 Kms from Boothapandi, 8 Kms from Thovalai, 12 Kms from Aralvaimozhi, 6 Kms from Suchindram, 14 Kms from Nagercoil, 10 Kms from Vadiveeswaram, 15 Kms from Kanyakumari and 100 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Marungoor can be reached from Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and Suchindram by Bus. Nearest Railway Stations are located at Kanyakumari, Nagercoil and Thovalai. Nearest Airport is located at Thiruvananthapuram.

மும்மூர்த்தி அம்ச முருகன்

மூலஸ்தானத்தில் முருகன் அசுர மயில் மீது அமர்ந்த நிலையில் காட்சி தருகிறார். இவரது சிலை திருவாசி, மயிலுடன் ஒரே கல்லில் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பது சிறப்பான அமைப்பு. உடன் வள்ளி, தெய்வானை இருக்கின்றனர்.

கந்தசஷ்டிக்கு மும்மூர்த்தி அலங்காரம்

ஐப்பசியில் சூரசம்ஹாரம் முடிந்த மறுநாள் காலையில் முருகன் சிவப்பு வஸ்திரம் அணிந்து (சிவப்பு சாத்தி)நடராஜராகவும், மதியம் வெள்ளை (வெள்ளை சாத்தி) வஸ்திரத்துடன் பிரம்மாவாகவும், மாலையில் பச்சை (பச்சை சாத்தி) வஸ்திரம் அணிந்து விஷ்ணு சொரூபமாகவும் காட்சி தருவார்.

மக்களைக் காணும் மகேசன்

விமோசனம் கேட்டு தன்னை வழிபட்ட உச்சைசிரவஸுக்கு, சிவனே பாவ விமோசனம் கொடுத்தருளியிருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அவர் அவ்வாறு செய்யாமல் முருகனை வழிபடும் படி அதை அனுப்பி வைத்தார். தன் அம்சமான முருகனுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்க வேண்டுமென்பதற்காக சிவன் இவ்வாறு செய்ததாகச் சொல்வர். இதனால் இத்தல முருகனை சிவனாகக் கருதி சிவமுருகன் என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள். சிவனுக்குரிய ஆகமப்படியே பூஜைகளும் நடக்கிறது. கந்தசஷ்டி திருவிழா இங்குவிசேஷம். முருகனுக்கு குதிரை வாகனம் உள்ள விசேஷத்தலம் இது.

சோறூட்டும் வைபவம்

பிறந்த குழந்தைக்கு முதல் அன்னம் ஊட்டும் வைபவம் இக்கோயிலில் அதிகளவில் நடக்கிறது. இந்த சடங்கை நிகழ்த்த வரும் பக்தர்கள், சுப்பிரமணியருக்கு புளிசாதம், வெண்சாதம், சர்க்கரை பொங்கல், உப்பு, புளி, மிளகாய் சேர்ந்த துவையல் என அறுசுவை உணவைப் படைத்து, குழந்தைக்கு ஊட்டுகின்றனர். தன்னை வணங்கும் பக்தர்களுக்கு மருங்கில் (நெருங்கி) வந்து அருள்பவர் என்பதால், இவ்வூர் மருங்கூர் என பெயர் பெற்றது. இத்தலத்திற்கு வாசிபுரம் என்றும் பெயருண்டு. வாசி என்றால் குதிரை. பிரகாரத்தில் கன்னி விநாயகர், சண்முகர், குலசேகர விநாயகர், பீட வடிவில் காவல் தெய்வம் பூதத்தான் மற்றும் காசிலிங்கம் சன்னதிகள் உள்ளன. கோயில் எதிரில் முருக தீர்த்தம் உள்ளது. உற்சவர் சண்முகர், கந்தசஷ்டி விழாவின்போது மட்டுமே புறப்பாடாவார். மற்ற நாட்களில் இவரை சன்னதிக்குள் மட்டுமே தரிசிக்க முடியும்.

தல வரலாறு

அகலிகை மீது ஆசை கொண்ட இந்திரனின் உடல் முழுவதும் கண்ணாகும் படி அவளது கணவர் கவுதம முனிவர் சபித்து விட்டார். சாப விமோசனம் பெற இந்திரன் இங்கு வந்தான். இவ்வூர் அருகிலுள்ள சுசீந்திரத்தில் சிவன் காட்சி தந்து விமோசனம் கொடுத்தருளினார். இந்திரனைச் சுமந்ததால், தனக்கும் பாவம் ஒட்டிக்கொண்டதாகக் கருதிய அவனது வாகனமான உச்சைசிரவஸு என்னும் குதிரையும் சிவனிடம் விமோசனம் கேட்டது. சிவன் இத்தலத்தைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி முருகனை வழிபட விமோசனம் கிடைக்குமென்றார். அதன்படி இங்கு வந்த உச்சைசிரவஸு, இங்கிருந்த குன்றின் மீது முருகனை வேண்டி தவமிருந்தது. முருகப்பெருமான் அதற்கு காட்சி தந்து விமோசனம் கொடுத்தருளினார். பிற்காலத்தில் இங்கு சுப்பிரமணியருக்கு கோயில் எழுப்பப்பட்டது. குதிரை வழிபட்ட தலம் என்பதால், இத்தல முருகன் விழாக்காலங்களில் மயிலுக்குப் பதிலாக குதிரையில் பவனிவருவார்.
