Vazhkaiputhagalur Paramasundarar Temple (Nannilam)

 

Vazhkaiputhagalur is very close to Nannilam.  We have already seen the Achuthamangalam Temple.  This temple is around 3 kms from there.  Those who visit Sri Vanjiam and Achuthamangalam temples, could easily cover this temple.  The temple we are going to visit is Shri Parameswari sametha Shri Paramasundarar temple.

As per records, this ancient temple dates back to 917AD ( period of Paranthaka Chozhan).  Though it is present for over 1000 years, until recently, the condition of this temple was pathetic as it was totally dilapidated.  Parts of the temple could be seen in the midst of paddy fields.  The renovation work was taken by Shri Mahalakshmi Charitable Trust of Chennai and the work was in full swing till a couple of years back.  I hope that the Kumbabhishekam is already done.  Since the renovation work was going on, despite the temple timings of 6 am to 10 am and from 5 to 8 pm, the availability of the priest should be ascertained in advance.  More information could be obtained from 044 2815 2533, 098400 53289 and 099400 53289.  Local readers may update the status of the renovation work.

There are ten temples with which snakes are associated like Thirupampuram, Thirunageswaram, Keezhapuliyur, Kumbakonam Nageswarar etc.  This is also included in that list due to its connection with snakes and ant hills where the snakes live.  Hence it is also called Pathaavathu Paambur ( 10th snake temple). There are a number of such ant hills near the temple and snake movement within and outside the temple, is frequent.  In fact, a lot of people have seen a snake coming inside the sanctorum and surrounding the Lingam during Pradosham time pooja.  Though it was witnessed by many, attempts to capture in film, have not succeeded.  There are number of occasions when the shed skin of snakes ( Molting in English or Pampu Chattai in Tamil) is seen in the temple premises.  However, there are no instances of anyone bitten by snakes or death due to snake bites in this area.

As per sthala puranam, a sage by name Puthagai was staying in this place and he was doing intense penance to Lord Shiva.  For several years he was in tapas and he was completely covered by ant hills and snakes were crawling all over his body.  Still, he was not affected and he was only praying to Shiva.  Pleased with his prayers, Shiva appeared before him and as desired by him, remained as Paramasundarar in this place.  This place is named after him as Puthagalur and the prefix Vazhkai was added subsequently. The name Puthagalur may be having something to do with ant hills which are called Puthu or Putru in Tamil. 

The Moolavar is a beautiful lingam on the Avudayar.  He faces east.  As per the inscriptions in this temple, He is also called Amara Sundarar.  Ambal Parameswari is another beautiful idol in a standing posture in separate south facing shrine.  People worship on Sundays for finalising marriage alliances. 

Other than the two main shrines, the only other significant shrine is that of Shri Dakshinamurthy.  The main inscription giving the details of this temple, are sculpted on the back of the Dakshinamurthy idol.  I have not come across any other temple where there are inscriptions on the back of an idol. Since there are large number of ant hills with snakes, people offer milk in this temple for Rahu and Ketu.  This is one of the Parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu.

*ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் புத்தகை என்ற மகாமுனிவர் சிவனை நோக்கிக் கடுந்தவம் புரிந்தார்.*

*சில நாட்களில் அவரைச் சுற்றி புற்றுகள் சூழ்ந்தது. அவரது கை மட்டும் இந்த சிவனை (ஸ்ரீ பரமசுந்தரர்) நோக்கியே இருந்தது.ஓம் நமச்சிவாய என்ற ஒலி மட்டும் வந்ததாகவும், அவருடைய தல வலிமையை மெச்சிய சிவன் அவருக்கு தரிசனம் தந்து, இங்கு எழுந்தருளினார் என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது.*

 எம்பெருமான் இம்முனிவருக்கு காட்சி அளித்ததால் இந்த ஊர் திருப்புத்தகை என்றும் நாளடைவில் புத்தகளூர் என மருவி வழங்கப்படுகிறது. இதற்குச் சான்றாக இன்றும் இந்த ஊரில் நிறைய பாம்புகளும், பாம்பு புற்றுகளும் காணப்படுகின்றன.பாம்புகள் யாரையும் கடிப்பதில்லை.

கல்வெட்டு தகவலின்படி இன்றும் இந்த ஊர் கோயிலானது 10வது பாம்பு ஊர் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.திருநாகேஸ்வரம்,திருபாம்பிரத்திற்கு இணையாக பாம்புக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் அளிக்கும் விதமாக கோயில் அருகே நிறைய பெரிய பெரிய புற்றுகள் உள்ளன.

இன்றும் ஒவ்வொரு பிரதோஷத்தின் போதும் பாம்பானது சிவன்மேல் எந்தவித பயம் இல்லாமல் படுத்துக்கொண்டு மக்களுக்கு காட்சி அளிக்கிறது.

அடிக்கடி சிவன் அருகிலே பாம்பானது சட்டை உரிப்பதும் ரொம்ப அதிசயமாகும். ஆனால் எத்தனை புகைப்படம், எப்படி எடுத்தாலும் பாம்பு மாத்திரம் காட்சி அளிக்கவில்லை என்பது உலக அதிசயம். ஆனால் பாம்புகள் கடிப்பதோ, கஷ்டமோ கொடுப்பதில்லை.

இந்த நிகழ்வுக்கு சான்றாக தெட்சிணாமூர்த்திக்கு பின்புறம் கல்வெட்டு உள்ளது.

 அதன்படி கி.பி. 917 ஆம் ஆண்டு முதலாம் பராந்தக சோழனால் திருப்பணி செய்யப்பட்டது, என்றும் இந்த கோயிலுக்காக நிறைய தானங்கள் அவன் கொடுத்தாகவும் தகவல் உள்ளது. பரமசுந்தரர், அமரசுந்தரர் என்றும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது அங்குள்ள குருவானவர் ஞானகுரு என்றும் ஞானகாரகன் என்றும் தெரிவிக்கிறது.

கல்வெட்டுக்கள் மூலம் சுவாமி பரமசுந்தரர் என்று அறியப்படுகிறது. மிகவும் அழகாக,நேர்த்தியாக ஆவுடையாருடன் காட்சி அளிக்கிறார்.

அம்பாள் மிகவும் அழகான தோற்றத்துடன் லட்சணமாக காட்சி அளிக்கிறாள்.

வேறு எங்கேயுமே காணமுடியாத அழகான சிலை. தெட்சிணாமூர்த்தி பின்புறமே எழுத்துக்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. சிலையின் பின்புறம் கல்வெட்டு இருப்பது அதிசயமாகும். 

மற்ற சிலைகள் எதுவும் காணப்படவில்லை.கோயிலின் அருகே நிறைய புற்றுகள், பாம்புகள் இருப்பதாலும்,செவ்வாய், வெள்ளி பாம்புக்கு பால் ஊற்ற இராகு, கேது, நாக தோஷம் போகும் என்கின்றனர். இது இராகு,கேதுவிற்குரிய பரிகாரஸ்தலங்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.

தெட்சிணாமூர்த்தி இங்கு ஞானகுருவாக உள்ளதால் நமக்கு ஞானத்தையும், கல்வி அறிவினையும், மனஅமைதியும் கொடுக்கின்றார். 

அவரை வியாழக்கிழமைகளில் வழிபட மனக்குழப்பம் நீங்கி சித்தம் தெளியும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.பரமேஸ்வரியை ஞாயிறு அன்று வழிபட கல்யாணம் நடைபெறுவதாக கூறுகின்றார்கள்.

நேர்த்திக்கடன்:

சிவனுக்கும், அம்மனுக்கும் அபிஷேகம் செய்து புது வஸ்திரம் அணிவித்து நேர்த்திகடன் செலுத்துகின்றனர்.
